Decks
We exclusively use PWT Treated™ LVLs because they provide a stronger, straighter, and longer-lasting deck structure than traditional lumber. PWT is the only LVL that is preservative-treated during the manufacturing process, which means the protection is built all the way through the material, not just applied to the surface. This creates uniform durability throughout the entire beam for both exterior and interior use.
Unlike standard treated wood that can twist, warp, or shrink over time, PWT LVLs are engineered to stay stable and true. They give us a flatter, more precise structure to build on, which results in a better-looking and better-performing finished project.
With a 25-year warranty, PWT LVLs allow us to build decks that are not only beautiful on day one, but structurally sound and reliable for decades. Simply put, they give your outdoor space a stronger foundation and longer lifespan than conventional materials.

Deck Framing Material Comparison
Material/System | What it is | Stability / Straightness | Strength / Spans | Moisture / Weight | Rot/Corrosion Resistance | Warranty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
PWT Treated™ LVL (Pacific Woodtech) | Engineered laminated veneer lumber treated for exterior use (above ground) | No crown; consistent dimensions; engineered for minimal movement | Higher strength/ stiffness than dimensional lumber; supports longer spans | Dry treatment (not pressure-saturated); lighter than typical PT lumber | Treated against rot, decay, and wood-destroying insects | 25-year limited, transferable (residential) | Ideal where flatness and long spans are critical; pair with compatible fasteners/ connectors |
KDAT Brown Treated Lumber | Pressure-treated lumber that is kiln-dried after treatment (often with brown pigment) | More stable than 'green' PT; reduced warp/ cup/ twist; can finish immediately | Comparable to PT of same species/ grade | Kiln-dried to reduce moisture; lighter and easier to handle | Depends on treatment (e.g., MCA/CA-C); protection against rot/ termites | Typically 'limited lifetime' against rot/ decay (varies by treater/ chemistry) | Confirm exact warranty with your supplier/ brand (Viance, MicroPro, etc.) |
Fortress® Evolution® Steel Deck Framing | Powder-coated, galvanized steel deck framing system (joists, ledgers, beams) | Dimensionally stable; stays straight; noncombustible | High strength-to-weight; long spans with engineered components | Inorganic; no moisture absorption; lighter sections vs PT beams for equivalent capacity | Galvanized & coated; corrosion considerations in saltwater/ coastal environments | 25-year limited (registration/ maintenance requirements; reduced near saltwater) | Use compatible fasteners; follow saltwater/ coastal guidance |
Green (Standard) Pressure-Treated Lumber | Conventional PT lumber (not kiln-dried after treatment) | Higher initial moisture; very prone to shrink/ warp/ cup as it dries | Standard spans for species/ grade; shorter than engineered or steel for same depth | Wet/ heavy at purchase; dries in place | Chemically treated for rot/ termite resistance | Often 'limited lifetime' against rot/ decay for residential (brand-specific) | Verify brand-specific warranty (e.g., Viance Ecolife/ Preserve, MicroPro) |
